WHEN I AM GONE
by John T. Baker
“When you are gone,” she softly spoke, “What would you like for me To do to show my love for you? What would you like?” said she. “I’d like,” I said, “no tears, my dear; I’d like instead a few Sweet moments when you think of me And of my love for you. “I’d like you to recall our joy And, if you wish, our tears, And be reminded of our dreams, Our hopes, our doubts, our fears. “Remember, if you will, my faults, Recall mistakes I made, But never, dear, forget my love . . . Too seldom I displayed. For when I’m gone I’ll think of you Wherever I may be, And thank the everlasting gods That you belonged to me.
