Doing What We Must
This lace monitor is lacier than most -
see him sitting up in triumph on his post!
His tattered lace a-flutter in the early morning air,
he's disdainful of this human and he really doesn't care
that I'm chasing him, a brazen thief
who stole a juicy slice of beef
from the table in our camp;
what a scamp!
Yesterday he stole two eggs;
he's very independent, never begs
for food, not like the gentle Wallaroo
who stands, a little nervous, watching what we do,
but who's always willing to accept a scrap,
or the Currawong who gladly climbs upon my lap
to take a crust.
I guess we forest dwellers all do what we must.
