If I Should Seem Detached

I may seem odd to you, but I don't care.
I've always thought a dragon would be sweet
to have around the place, and I will treat
it with respect. I'll love it, and I'll rear
it carefully. I'll make a cosy lair
that it can call its own. I'll even heat
its blankets, give it what it wants to eat…
invite my enemies for it to scare!

But that's all in the future, first I must
protect my dragon's egg until it's hatched;
until its baby claw can break the crust.
Oh lord I am excited, nothing's matched
this joy in all my life! And now I trust
you'll understand if I should seem… detached.
