I See You
I thought I saw you in the football crowd
but then, I think I see you everywhere.
I see your shapely head, your thatch of hair,
that tilted chin; your air, aloof and proud.
I thought I saw you at the flower show,
and going down a supermarket aisle;
it’s such a shock I have to pause awhile
until my choppy heartbeats start to slow.
I know you’ll never watch a football match,
or push a wobbly trolley, touch a leaf;
and yet I see you – I hallucinate…
until I turn the key, undo the latch,
and let a sunbeam through the door, a brief
bright arrow to the place you live, below the grate.
