Isolation

I loved him with a passion, I
was mad for him I guess.
He said we needed no-one else,
the two of us alone
would live out on his opal lease,
in splendid isolation.

We moved out onto Rocky Knoll,
and strung a barbed wire fence,
to keep the outside world outside
and keep us safe within;
and as he'd said, we lived and loved,
in splendid isolation.

I braved the daily hardships, and
I worked from dawn to dusk.
With belly huge I wasn't well…
and yet he kept me there,
and then our unborn baby died,
in splendid isolation.

I walked down to the creek today,
and took the miner's track,
to climb up onto Rocky Knoll.
The view was grand from there,
and not a jarring note disturbed
my splendid isolation.

I sat alone with him at dusk,
watched sunset from the knoll,
just me above and him below -
he's trapped deep in the shaft,
and that's where I will leave him be,
in splendid isolation.
