Jewel Beetles

Some people think good fortune can be theirs
if it can somehow be transferred to them
from lovely living things, like scarabs that
Egyptians felt brought luck. This wattle tree
is glinting with the jewel-brilliant wings
of beetles, on its chandeliers of gold,
and every Jewel Beetle holds its mate.
To us it seems these beetles have the life
we humans seek and count as best – each has
its love, a home, and each is beautiful.
It's obvious they're lucky – that's quite clear,
but if you tried to win some luck from them…

that Jewel Beetle luck might not translate;
perhaps you'd get an iridescent mate!
