The Dreamer of Dreams

”… your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28

Don’t scoff at what you’ll never understand.
You think that I hallucinate? Your smile
shows that you do – and next you’ll ask what brand
of pill or booze I guzzled. I’m a mile
ahead of you. While I can’t verify
the dream I had, it’s true, just as I told
you on the phone. This is beyond the ‘why’
of human understanding and the cold
unfeeling scientific eye. I saw
a child caught in the drain – let’s get him out!
He has a little cut, is cold and sore
and frightened. Now for him, suspend your doubt.

And when the child was lifted from the drain
I turned away, to dream my dreams again.
