The Orchids of Autumn

Oh look in the woodlands near Dubbo
and on roadsides from March till mid-May
for the exquisite greenhood orchids
that are scattered along the way.

They grow in the stock routes on highways
in the company of fine native grass
and sheltered by pines in our woodlands
in places where no footsteps pass.

These orchids of autumn so dainty
in their dresses pinstriped white and green
will nod all their sweet heads from shyness
if you should come onto the scene.

Tread softly; go slowly, to find them
pale greenhoods, our autumn’s own gem!
