The Puddle

I found a little miracle along a forest track –
I passed a muddy puddle, then I turned and wandered back.
I thought I saw a movement there, and yet there shouldn't be,
not in a muddy puddle… I stopped, and bent to see.

A dozen wriggling tadpoles swam and kicked their tiny feet,
and soon the metamorphosis to frogs will be complete!
But how did little parent frogs know where the rain would fall
to form a muddy puddle underneath those gum trees tall?

The puddle won't be there for long, the sun will dry it out,
by then the tadpoles will be frogs – there really is no doubt,
the forest's full of miracles, and secrets and surprise,
you only need to look for them with childhood in your eyes.
