THEY WAIT TO POUNCE

Confound you, give me back my mask,
they wait to pounce. I am afraid,
and cower here, cold, naked, crazed.
I wish to go back out and bask
in their esteem. The smiles they made
from frowns and sneers had me amazed.
You know it was the mask that turned
their fickle mouths from down to up!

I had not thought that such a trick
would work on them when they had spurned
me as I am…now pass the cup
and while they drink, (you must be quick
they wait to pounce) again I ask,
no, beg you, give me back my mask.
